The original question

At the end of 2017, one of the TIS Group founders was part of the development team for a one-off Deutsche Telekom project to show what he can do. At the end of the project, he was asked to help Deutsche Telekom build an infrastructure with full service support. This is how the collaboration between This is Support began.

What we do

The AWS management and finances are handled by Deutsche Telekom while This is Support manages the hosting platform on which everything runs. We do this in the Virtual Private Cloud of AWS. There we install and program what we think is necessary, in order to manage the entire platform. We do DevOps, monitoring and software development. Deutsche Telekom has a portal and a website for customers, IOT Creators, and everything behind that is what we have developed with the exception of the Nokia platform. It’s a complete web solution for buying and managing Internet of Things devices. We work there on a two-week sprint basis in which features are developed, bugs are resolved and improvements are made.

The benefits of the collaboration

The advantage of working with us is the speed with which we pick up and implement projects. We don’t feel like a supplier, we feel like an extension of the team and thereby we experience a great responsibility to tackle projects carefully. Deutsche Telekom is sometimes still amazed at how quickly we pick things up and can implement them. This is partly due to the correct arrangement of the CI / CD, these pipelines ensure that the speed of the deployment is increased. In addition, after a few sentences we already know what the proper technology solution is for the organization’s question. What Deutsche Telekom does

We make a platform for developers who create Internet of Things solutions. They use Deutsche Telekom’s connectivity and other ingredients to eventually arrive at a new IoT solution. For that we need a platform, and that platform has to be constantly developed and managed.

What we do

One of the challenges we had and the reason I enjoy working with TIS Group so much is because of their willingness to be flexible and work with us. . Despite that, Internet of Things is a growth market. It is well known to everyone and one day it will become very big. It is not a question of if it will happen, but when… it is going very slowly. In order to apply all these new technologies, people have to change, so it is still quite uncertain. I consider it as an industrial revolution, which can take more than 20 years to develop. I have to be able to constantly change strategy, also in terms of product development, because the customers are also constantly changing. In addition, I need a flexible team within Deutsche Telekom that can and and will change quickly, and that also applies to the suppliers. TIS Group is more than just a supplier, I see and experience us as one team. From a black and white point of view, you are a supplier, and it has to be able to change and move quickly, which is one of the main reasons for me that we still work together today.

The reason we choose you

Patrick, one of the co-founders, was already working for us. He built our infrastructure from scratch. I actually didn’t know what he was doing, something with backend development, but that’s a long way off for me and a screen with zeros and ones. When I saw what he came back with, which was an infrastructure that is very scalable, future-proof and flexible. Not only in terms of people, but also in terms of infrastructure. I saw how quickly and flexibly we could continue to develop. That gave me extra confidence. Also the style of communication is very down to earth, honest and direct. That can clash with some customers. I like that it gives me the feeling that you have reached a certain level of trust with each other. Where you can be open and honest with each other without harming each other’s emotions. That was it for me. In the end everyone says they are a no nonsense company. They have it all on their website these days. You will only experience the flexibility of a supplier if you start working with them. You see the no nonsense soon enough and I saw that pretty quickly with you. This reinforces the other values of the collaboration.

Why Th[is] is unique

The flexibility and the down to earth with the no nonsense factor is unique, but what really stands out is your proactivity. We have often experienced that you come to us with an idea. You notice something and indicate that it would be better for us to take a different path for more efficient cooperation. Not only for the cooperation with you, but also for our own customer relationships. The proactive approach is very nice, it is sometimes about collaboration, but also about the certain choices that are made in technology. At the time, there was often an internal discussion at T-Mobile about what Patrick was building in the backend, what Kubernetes is and why we need it. I saw that it was necessary to make our infrastructure future-proof. That is also proactive.

The milestones

I will go further back in time. What is special is that we were the first operator in the world, then with T-Mobile, to enter the market with a commercial proposition with new techniques. Not only the first in the world but also with a quite destructive business model. In the past, operators sold calling minutes and bits and bytes (MB and GB). This is a business model that is dying out, operators can no longer get much return from it. As an operator, we want a business model that is sustainable for the future with the new technology. We moved away from MBs and GBs to a message-based proposition. That is quite complex, we had to change our entire system. That was a great success that we achieved thanks to you. We are still benefiting from this 3 years later. Right now we are making that new milestone. Another milestone was that a year ago we relaunched a platform under the international brand Deutsche Telekom. Now we offer 1 type of product only in the backlog. We are now working on new products to be offered around the summer via our portals.

The co-creation

That’s so beautiful about you. The co-creation, you also enforce this and that is good. Most parties always stay in the background and are more cautious. In the beginning I noticed this especially in the contact with Jeroen. He kept pushing for a meeting and more involvement. At first I thought it was fine alone with Patrick, but later I saw the added value in it. This was really worth it, you should cherish that.
